Beginning of Year MAP Testing
Hello Learning Coaches and CASC students!
Welcome to the first week of school. We hope it’s a wonderful week and are preparing for an exciting year of learning together!
One of the first jobs you will be tasked with is completing the MAP Growth assessment, a computer adaptive test that adjusts to your learning level based on your response to previous questions. The MAP test is important because each time you take the assessment, it gives an accurate measure of what you know and what you need to learn which helps families and schools join together to help students maximize learning throughout this school year. CASC will be giving the MAP test three times this year in compliance with state and federal guidelines. Our first testing window is this week, so we want you to learn a little more about the test and be prepared for your test session.
Before Testing:
Today, you need to open this document and follow the instructions detailing what to do “Prior to Test Day”. This includes making sure your computer has the minimum requirements to access the test. Following these steps will ensure that you don’t have any technology problems during the testing session this week. We will also do a technology check in homeroom orientation on Monday.
On Test Day:
Your tests are scheduled for:
Reading- Thursday, August 10
Math- Friday, August 11
6th Grade ONLY - Science - Monday, August 14
*join using your Class Connect schedule
On test day, students will test in a monitored Class Connect session. Students will go to their Class Connect session, and be instructed to log into the testing site- https://test.mapnwea.org/#/nopopup. Their testing administrator will then give them a student login and password to access the test and get them started after reading some instructions.
One of the biggest ways learning coaches can help during the test is to make sure students are in a distraction-free environment and try their best. Learning coaches should also monitor students to make sure they stay focused on the test. If your student seems stuck on one question, remind them to just do their best but move on. You’ll also want to be nearby to help in case they experience any technical problems. However, learning coaches should not help students with any questions or read the test to students because this could skew results and prevent teachers from planning the best instruction for students.
Students will need to have cameras on and access to a microphone. Please look at your Class Connect schedule to see when you are scheduled to take the test this week. Although sessions are scheduled for 2-hour periods, students typically complete the test in 45-60 minutes.
After Testing:
After students complete both the math and reading tests, students and LCs will be sent an email with the subject “NWEA MAP Student Progress Report”. The report will be attached as a .pdf. Please use these results to talk with your students about their learning and set growth goals for the middle of the year test.
In Conclusion:
All CASC students will be required to complete the test during the testing window. If you foresee any issues with being able to take the test, please email me immediately because students who don’t test will be considered an engagement concern and could lose access to their curriculum.
Additionally, for families who want to learn more about the MAP test, why we give it, and how it helps your child learn, please read this overview, “MAP Growth 101: Everything families need to know” and the Family Guide to MAP Growth. Additionally, many of your questions will be answered from exploring the resources in the Family Toolkit.
